How to establish a relaxing nighttime routine

Sleep: we all feel so much better when we have a good night of it, but it can be surprisingly difficult to drift off and have a full night of uninterrupted slumber. With daily stresses and strains and ever-increasing busy lifestyles, we often spend those precious hours of rest evaluating the day, mentally compiling to-do lists or worrying about things out of our control. Sound familiar? The first step to a good night’s sleep is establishing a relaxing nighttime routine, helping you to wind down and fully switch off before bed. Here are our (tried and tested) relaxation techniques for sleep.

Switch off (physically)

We’re all guilty of mindlessly scrolling through our phones, firing off a late-night email or binging on Netflix well into the evening but this tech overload could be affecting the quality of your sleep. Switch off all devices after 9pm if possible and give your mind a rest – after all, you’ve spent all day working hard so you deserve to disconnect for the evening. Not only that, but gadgets like phones, computers and TVs emit blue light, which interrupt the brain’s natural sleep signals.

Pamper yourself

Use your evenings to have some ‘me time’, relax and look after your skin as well as your mental wellbeing. A warm bath will help you to stop and unwind – add Epsom salt, which soothes tired muscles and can help ease stress, and a few drops of essential oil (we love the Harmony Blend Essential Oil from fellow Aussie brand Jurlique) for extra relaxation. Pop a face mask on too – not only do they have specific skin care benefits, but they take a good 10-15 minutes to work, forcing you to do nothing but sit back, relax and let it work its magic.

Create a peaceful sleeping environment

The ideal sleeping environment is cool, dark and quiet. Dim the lights in your bedroom and light a calming LUMIRA candle such as the Balinese Ylang Ylang (this intoxicating fragrance creates an almost-instant relaxing atmosphere). Get into bed with a good book (remember, no screens) and apply the Persian Rose Perfume Oil before drifting off – it’s a beautiful scent to wake up to and start your day.

Head to the Jurlique blog for more advice on getting a good night’s sleep and setting up your ultimate night routine (thank us later).
